Downers Grove Community Kitchen

Since March 2020, a grass-roots organization partnering with several local churches, organizations and individuals has been sharing a bit of dignity with our homeless and food insecure neighbors in the Downers Grove area. Named “Alex’s Mission” in memory of an early guest who passed away, we serve breakfast and dinner to guests impacted by the COVID pandemic. During our interactions we hope to create a neighborly connection with our guests while providing a few basic needs during these unprecedented times

Originally serving at the parking garage, train station and in parking lots, we have now partnered with the First Congregational United Church of Christ to serve the meals from a small building on its campus at 1047 Curtiss Street in Downers Grove, just across the street from the Public Library. This building, renamed the Community Kitchen, now provides a consistent location for guests and volunteers alike, and has space to make available clothing and toiletries to our guests in addition to meals. Breakfast is served each morning at 8:00 a.m., and dinner at 5:30 p.m.

New volunteers and organizations are welcome to join us! Please contact us at:  dgalexsmission@gmail.com. For more information about Alex’s Mission, please see the website at:

https://bit.ly/AlexsMission.

Memorial gifts and other financial contributions are also welcomed. While most food and other items are donated, we often find it necessary to supplement the donated items with purchases. As our guest population increases through the winter months of the COVID pandemic, we will require additional financial support to continue feeding our neighbors’ bodies and spirits.

Gifts for the Community Kitchen are segregated and used specifically for that purpose. Contributions should be made payable to First Congregational United Church of Christ, with a memo indicating Community Kitchen, and delivered to the Church or the Community Kitchen, or mailed to:
